A multi-disciplinary operation conducted on Sunday, 20/03 at the Department of Correctional Service at St Albans in Gqeberha resulted in the arrest of a 38-year-old Correctional Services employee and the confiscation of drugs and cell phones.
It is alleged that at about 05:30 on abovementioned date, Gqeberha K9 Unit, the Anti-Gang Unit and the Department of Correctional Services conducted a stop and search on vehicles and personnel entering the prison premises. During the search of a Mercedes mini bus, police K9 ‘Coda’ reacted to a package which contained drugs.
Further investigation led the team to searching a prison cell where more drugs (dagga, cocaine and tik), 6 cell phones and 3 cell phone charges were seized.
The total amount of drugs confiscated in the sting operation amounted to 400 mandrax tablets, 2 rolls of dagga, 14 packets of cocaine, 34 packets of tik and cash.
The suspect was arrested on a charge of dealing in drugs and will appear at the St Albans Magistrate Court on Tuesday 22/03.
