Mtubatuba:A tragic road crash near Mtubatuba in the early hours of Sunday morning has claimed the lives of 11 people. The collision occurred on the N2 in the Nkodibe area when a minibus taxi and a truck collided head-on.

According to South African Government News Agency, the taxi was carrying Maskandi music enthusiasts returning from a festival hosted by artist Sgwebo in Melmoth, uMthonjaneni. Following the crash, the taxi caught fire, resulting in nine passengers being burnt beyond recognition. Additionally, nine other individuals sustained serious injuries and were transported to the hospital for treatment.

The truck involved in the tragedy was reportedly en route to the uMfolozi sugar mill. The KwaZulu-Natal Premier, Thamsanqa Ntuli, expressed deep sorrow over the loss of life and extended condolences to the bereaved families. Premier Ntuli described the incident as a "devastating tragedy" and emphasized the heartbreaking nature of losing so many lives in a single accident.

Premier Ntuli also acknowledged the efforts of emergency services and individuals who responded to the scene. He urged motorists to exercise extreme caution, especially during early morning hours when fatigue can impair driving capability. He called on law enforcement to ensure road safety laws are enforced, including preventing drunk driving and ensuring vehicles are roadworthy.

The Premier thanked Mtubatuba Local Municipality Mayor Mxolisi Mthethwa for his efforts at the scene, assisting with the emergency response and coordination. Ntuli highlighted the importance of supporting affected families and ensuring a thorough investigation into the circumstances of the tragedy.
