A pair of lionesses and a cub have been spotted at Muyako village in the Katima Mulilo Rural Constituency in the Zambezi Region.

Wildlife and National Parks Control Warden in the Ministry of Environment, Tourism and Forestry, Leverty Muyoba, told Nampa on Wednesday that the pair of lions, which was spotted by a local villager on Tuesday afternoon, is also believed to be coming from Botswana’s Chobe National Park. Muyoba cautioned inhabitants of both the Katima Mulilo Urban and Rural constituencies to be on alert as these predators are on the loose.

‘There has been a drought spell, so wild animals have been migrating in search for water and we should expect more of these. However, as a ministry, we have agreed to capture this wildlife and translocate it to the Bwabwata National Park,’ Muyoba added.

He further said people should avoid taking shortcuts, especially in bushy areas, as this is where lions tend to hide and sleep when they are not active.

Meanwhile, the lioness, whose mate was euthanised on Mond
ay is still on the loose and is reported to have been traced in different areas of Katima Mulilo Rural Constituency such as Kalumba and Katima Farm through its footprints.

‘We should avoid walking long distances alone, especially at night. Now that we know that there are lions, we need to take care,’ Muyoba stated.
