Minister Senzo Mchunu addresses fifth Water Research Commission Symposium

Minister of Water and Sanitation, Mr Senzo Mchunu has pleaded with stakeholders in the water sector to rally behind ensuring that water supply exceeds water demand. This unwavering call was conveyed during the 5th Water Research Commission Symposium held on 20 September 2021.

 

Minister Mchunu gave a keynote address at the symposium which was also attended by Kenyan High Commissioner, Ms Beatrice Karago, Deputy Ministers of the Department of Water and Sanitation, Ms Dikeledi Magadzi and David Mahlobo, Deputy Minister of CoGTA, Ms Thembi Nkadimeng, Chairperson of the Water Research Commission, Dr Nozi Mjoli, and CEO of the Water Research Commission, Mr Dhesigen Naidoo, amongst others.

 

Minister Mchunu highlighted that all obligations imposed by the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa must be fulfilled since the government is based on the will of the people.

 

‘’Our mantra, as the Department of Water and Sanitation goes: ‘Water is life. Sanitation is dignity’; this highlights the importance of our mandate as it is anchored on two very fundamental human rights – the right to life and the right to human dignity, said the Minister.

 

During the engagement, Minister Mchunu pointed out some challenges on water availability and solutions thereof, these include: drought that continues to be experienced in some parts of the country and the Covid-19 pandemic which has exacerbated the water and sanitation challenges.

 

Minister Mchunu further urged the Water Research Commission to continue with its growing momentum designed to address our water quantity and water quality challenges through innovation and new technologies.

 

In addition, Minister Mchunu said that sustained investments in cutting-edge innovative technologies and solutions will transfigure sanitation.

 

“Technologies, that can use less water, or no water at all, are the future of our country, the continent, and the global community. As a water sector we need to embrace technological innovations and recognise them as the gamechanger we need in order to secure our water, now and in the future’’ Minister Mchunu stated.

 

As a parting shot, Minister Mchunu encouraged the sector to be open to new ideas and approaches to deliver water services, stressing the importance of embracing the 4th Industrial revolution and the new ways of doing things.
