Minister of Health Commissions New Emergency OPD and Pharmacy Blocks at PCMH

In a significant boost to Sierra Leone’s healthcare system, the Honorable Minister of Health, Dr. Austin Demby, officially commissioned the newly constructed Emergency Outpatient Department (OPD) and Pharmacy blocks at the Princess Christian Maternity Hospital (PCMH) in Freetown.

During the ceremony, Dr. Demby expressed his satisfaction with the successful completion of the project, emphasizing its importance in improving emergency healthcare services in the country. ‘This new facility represents a significant leap forward in our efforts to strengthen healthcare services. It will provide critical care during emergencies and ensure patients can access life-saving medications without delay,’ Dr. Demby remarked.

The new Emergency OPD block is fully equipped with state-of-the-art medical equipment designed to handle a wide range of emergencies, from trauma cases to critical illnesses. The Pharmacy block, on the other hand, is set to enhance the efficiency of medical services by ensuring the timely availability
of medications. It is supported by a digital inventory system that will help streamline operations and reduce service delays.

Dr. Amadu Sesay, Acting Medical Superintendent of PCMH, expressed optimism about the impact of the new facilities on healthcare delivery. ‘This is a momentous occasion for us. These new blocks will alleviate the pressure on existing services and help reduce waiting times for patients,’ he said.

Also speaking at the event, the CEO of CUAMM, Don Dante Carraro, highlighted CUAMM’s support in rehabilitating and constructing the new Emergency OPD and Pharmacy blocks. He noted that the project aligns with the broader national health agenda to improve health outcomes by expanding access to quality healthcare across Sierra Leone. ‘CUAMM is committed to supporting the Ministry of Health by investing in healthcare infrastructure, with the ultimate goal of making quality healthcare more accessible and affordable for all citizens,’ Carraro added.

The event concluded with a tour of the newly com
missioned facilities, where Dr. Demby and other dignitaries interacted with staff and viewed the advanced medical equipment that would be used to serve patients in need.
