Pretoria: The Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation, Professor Blade Nzimande, warmly welcomed the Minister of Finance, Mr. Enoch Godongwana, to the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR). Minister Nzimande highlighted the visit as a significant affirmation of the essential role that science, technology, and innovation (STI) play in fortifying South Africa's economic resilience, modernizing industry, and fostering inclusive growth.
According to African Press Organization, Minister Nzimande emphasized the mutual understanding that South Africa's long-term prosperity is contingent upon effectively leveraging scientific and technological capabilities for the country's development. He asserted that science, technology, and innovation are strategic necessities, forming a foundational aspect of national growth.
Minister Nzimande reiterated the Department of Science, Technology, and Innovation's dedication to integrating STI into government, education, industry, and society. This aligns with South Africa's strategy to cultivate a knowledge-intensive and innovation-driven economy. He praised the CSIR as Africa's leading public research institution, noting its significant contributions to addressing key developmental areas such as digital technologies, health innovation, energy security, and more.
The Minister highlighted the CSIR's role in providing multidisciplinary research solutions that address national priorities and enhance the quality of life in South Africa. He cited the organization's support during the Covid-19 pandemic and its contributions following floods in KwaZulu-Natal as examples of its impact.
During the visit, Minister Godongwana underscored the importance of innovation in overcoming the nation's fiscal challenges.
