The Minister of Police, Mr Senzo Mchunu, commends the outstanding work of the South African Police Service (SAPS) for the successful apprehension of two suspects linked to the tragic murder of 64-year-old Nophumelel Makeleni, who was shot in the head on 20 August 2024 while selling meat in Kraaifontein. The two suspects robbed Ms Makeleni and shot her before fleeing the scene on foot. Minister Mchunu visited the Makeleni family on 29 August 2024 to pay his respects.

Through diligent investigative work, members of the SAPS found the suspects, Yanele Mangweni (also known as Ngwenya), aged 33, and Siyabonga Kholakele (also known as Siyamcela) on a farm in Klapmuts rural area.

In addition to the murder of Ms. Makeleni, the suspects have been linked to several other serious cases, including: murder, attempted murder and house robbery. Both suspects have since appeared in court.

In commending the SAPS, Minister Mchunu stated the following: ‘We commend the SAPS for their relentless pursuit of justice in this cas
e and for ensuring the safety of communities. When we visited the Makeleni family, they pleaded with the Ministry and SAPS to apprehend and bring the killers to justice – we have done just that. They will now face the consequences of their actions in a court of law, and justice will be served for the families and communities affected by their crimes. Let this also serve as a stern warning to criminals: the SAPS will continue to honour its commitment to keeping our streets safe. Those who commit heinous crimes will be found, no matter how long it takes, and they will face the full force of the law. Our thoughts remain with the victims of these tragic events, and we stand in solidarity with all those who continue to work tirelessly to protect and serve our communities.’
