Minister Barbara Creecy engages stakeholders ahead of second intergovernmental negotiating committee on plastic pollution, 25 May

The Minister of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment, Ms Barbara Creecy, will host a consultative stakeholder engagement meeting on South Africa’s negotiating position ahead of the second Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee (INC2) tomorrow, Thursday, 25 May 2023.

The second Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee (INC2) on Plastic Pollution is scheduled to take place in Paris, France from 29 May – 2 June 2023.

The Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee is mandated to develop a globally legally binding instrument on plastic pollution and marine litter. The INC2 meeting seeks to produce a document with elements that would be considered building blocks for the agreement. Elements should include a comprehensive approach which addresses the full lifecycle of plastics.

In January this year, the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment convened a preparatory stakeholder consultation consisting of plastic manufacturers and recyclers, business, environmental groups, academia as well as waste pickers, where they tabled their proposed inputs for country’s negotiating position.

Minister Creecy will engage with the stakeholders in a virtual consultation with the aim to consolidate South Africa’s negotiating position at INC2 in Paris.
