Medical doctor released on bail

EASTERN CAPE – Doctor Zonke Mrwenqwa-Mazwi (42) was released on R10 000-00 bail by Mthatha Specialised Commercial Crime Court on 16 February 2022 for allegations of Road Accident Fund (RAF) fraud.

During the period between February 2008 and February 2019, Mrwenqwa-Mazwi as a medical doctor is alleged to have confirmed to have treated 75 patients who were involved in 9 different accidents that took place between the aforesaid periods. She is reported to have written medical reports that recommended her undeserving clients to different law firms to be assisted with RAF claims.

RAF is reported to have successfully paid out R510 000-00 to the claimants before discovering some discrepancies in the other claims. RAF referred the case to Mthatha based Serious Commercial Crime Investigation team of the Hawks for investigation in 2019 which culminated in Mrwenqwa-Mazwi’s arrest on 16 February 2022.  The investigation further revealed that besides the R510 000-00 alleged to have been paid to other claimants, RAF nearly ran a potential loss of more than R18 million.

Mrwenqwa-Mazwi made her short appearance at Mthatha Specialised Crimes court the very same day of her arrest where she was released on R10 000 -00 bail. The matter is remanded to 28 March 2022 for further investigation.
