CAPE TOWN - The latest SAPS crime statistics indicate that 27 police officers were killed in the first three months of 2022.

Police Minister, General Bheki Cele will on Monday, 07 June 2022, receive a full briefing on the murder of Warrant Officer Siyakubonga Mphakathi, who was gunned down on Wednesday, 01 June 2022.

The 49 year-old Warrant Officer Mphakathi attached to the SAPS Rapid Rail Unit, was driving towards the Phillipi railway station in his vehicle, when he was shot through a vehicle window by unknown suspects. The officer died on the scene.

Detectives from the Directorate for Priority Crimes Investigation (DPCI) are investigating the murder.

Minister Cele is expected to also visit the family of the slain member.

Members of the media are advised the Ministers briefing will take place at the Mfuleni police station followed by a visit to the family home in Mfuleni.
