MEC Bukiwe Fanta expresses shock at murder of four children by own mother

The Social Development MEC, Bukiwe Fanta has learnt with shock the horrific murder of four children, allegedly by their own mother.

It is alleged that a 32 year old mother  assaulted them with a slash hammer. The children, who are aged between 2 and 11 were found dead in their home where they were sleeping with the mother. MEC Fanta is still battling to come to terms with the gruesome murder of these innocent lives.

“That four children have been slashed with a hammer is shocking enough, but to learn that it is their mother who is alleged to have done  this gruesome act is beyond any logical explanation. Our social workers have already visited the family, as you can imagine there is a dire need for psychosocial support to the family and the village at large. But I’ve also instructed the social workers to also visit the school where these children were schooling and offer psychosocial support even there.”

Fanta has also called on communities to speak out and not suffer in silence.

“I want to appeal to communities to make use of our social workers and seek psychosocial support whenever they feel under pressure or overwhelmed. Mental health is very important and speaking to a professional can help prevent many of these incidents in our communities.”

The MEC will also visit the family during the course of the week.
