WINDHOEK: President Nangolo Mbumba has been conferred with Namibia’s highest presidential award, The Most Ancient Order of Welwitschia Mirabilis.

During an event at State House on Saturday, Mbumba was presented with the award, a presidential sash, by former President Hifikepunye Pohamba. The sash symbolises his role as the Head of State.

Mbumba became Namibia’s fourth president following the death of former President, Hage Geingob on 04 February 2024.

The president dedicated his achievement to people who have played an invaluable role in shaping his beliefs, thoughts, and character, including his grandparents.

‘It is therefore my privilege to acknowledge those family, friends, comrades and colleagues who have made this day possible,’ he said. ‘I am indebted to my maternal grandparents who laid the foundation for my success. Their nurturing, discipline and guidance has allowed me to achieve success beyond my greatest expectations.’

He further paid tribute to his family, including his wife and First lady,
Sustjie Mbumba.

‘To my lovely children, grandchildren and to the entire Mbumba and Nangolo clans. You are all responsible for this day. Your love, compassion and support has made this day possible. Thank you for always being there for me,’ he said.

Mbumba also paid tribute to his mentors, former President Hifikepunye Pohamba, and the Founding President, Sam Nujoma, as well as his predecessor, President Geingob. He further thanked his cadres in the Swapo Party.

‘My profound appreciation goes to all Swapo leaders, who have led our party with distinction in various capacities, since its inception, both alive and those who have passed on. Furthermore, I wish to thank all the Swapo Party rank and file, supporters, sympathisers and our veterans of the liberation struggle for your unwavering patriotism, commitment and support,’ he said.

Mbumba also expressed his gratitude to the Namibian people for their support.

‘Words cannot express fully the depth of my gratitude and emotions, however, I thank you all, whole
heartedly, for bestowing upon me this great honour of The Most Ancient Order of Welwitchia Mirabilis,’ he said.
