Omuthiya – The Ministry of Agriculture, Water and Land Reform (MAWLR) has committed to an emergency water provision for residents in the Oshikoto Region. Executive Director Ndiyakupi Nghituwamata communicated this assurance in response to the pressing need for water in Okankolo, Eengodi, and Nehale Lyampingana constituencies.
According to NAMPA, the ministry is actively organizing resources to address the water scarcity issue that has affected several communities countrywide. Nghituwamata detailed that the MAWLR is securing five water tanker trucks with different carrying capacities from various ministries including Defence and Veteran Affairs, Home Affairs, Immigration, Safety and Security, Environment, Forestry and Tourism, and the Office of the Judiciary.
The government acknowledges the difficulties faced by residents due to water supply challenges in the Oshikoto Region and commits to proactive communication regarding any future service interruptions. The statement also reassured that measures are in place at the highest governmental levels to ensure the restoration and continuity of water supply.
Furthermore, the notice underlined MAWLR’s role as the principal entity responsible for water resource management in Namibia and its dedication to providing an uninterrupted water supply in accordance with the Water Resources Management Act No. 11 of 2023.
The urgency of this initiative stems from the reported inconveniences and dire circumstances in regions including Oshana, Oshikoto, Ohangwena, Daures in Erongo, Tondoro in Kavango West, and Otjombinde in Omaheke.
In a related incident, Eengodi Constituency Councillor Protasius Neshuku reported to Nampa an altercation in Onalufipa village over access to traditional water wells, indicating the heightened tension and desperation among the affected populations. The dispute led to violence when a pensioner and his grandchildren were confronted by Angolan nationals claiming ownership of the wells. Following the incident, Neshuku called for community solidarity and patience as the government works to provide relief amid the ongoing natural disaster of drought.
