Mashatile Calls on Trade Unions to Lead in AI Transition

Johannesburg:Deputy President Paul Mashatile has urged trade unions to lead in the transition to artificial intelligence by advocating for policies that prioritize people in technological advancements. He emphasized the importance of preparing workers with the necessary skills and protections to thrive in the digital economy during his speech at the Federation of Unions of South Africa’s (FEDUSA) 8th National Congress.

According to South African Government News Agency, Mashatile warned that failing to embrace these changes could exacerbate inequality and exclusion. He challenged FEDUSA to ensure that institutions meant to advance workers' interests are effective, pointing out that despite progressive labor laws, significant inequalities persist in the labor market.

Mashatile also addressed the rising cost of living, particularly the increasing expense of electricity. He noted that the government is reviewing the electricity pricing policy to balance the needs of vulnerable households with sustainability and industrial competitiveness. The Deputy President highlighted that high electricity costs are hindering economic growth and placing a burden on households and energy-intensive industries.

He stressed the urgency of achieving stronger economic growth and job creation to reduce poverty and inequality, noting that South Africa's economy contracted by 0.2% in the second quarter of 2026. With about 8.5 million South Africans unemployed and an official unemployment rate of 33.6%, Mashatile called for a collective effort from the government, business, and organized labor to address these challenges and create opportunities.
