MELODING – Earlier this moring, at about 02:00, a security officer responded to a panic alarm at a filling station in Meloding. Upon arrival at the scene, he noticed a group of about 10 heavily armed men and an ATM that was bombed and totally damaged. The suspects fired several shots towards the responding security officer who retaliated. The suspects fled the scene on foot.
Further police investigation will establish if cash has been taken however, dye-stained banknotes were found next to the ATM.
Several cartridges and one live 9mm round were found at the scene.
Cases of ATM bombing and attempted murder have been registered for further investigation. Anyone with information that can lead to the arrests of these suspects is urged to contact Detective Sergeant James Ramaphiri of Provincial Organized Crime Unit on 065 629 6409 or Crime Stop on 08600 10111.
