The City of Cape Town is inviting residents and interested and affected parties to attend an open day at the Mamre Community Hall, Liedeman Street on Thursday, 30 September 2021 between 15:00 and 19:00. City officials will be present to provide residents with all the information pertaining to the Local Spatial Development Framework (LSDF) for Mamre.
The open day will enable residents to make informed comments on the draft LSDF for the area ahead of the closing date on 31 October 2021. The intention of this framework is to help provide direction for short to medium and long-term spatial and investment planning in Mamre. The LSDF has taken into account the unique qualities of Mamre and provides a vision for the town by highlighting opportunity areas and development guidelines that will guide its future growth.
‘Mamre is a place which residents are deeply rooted in and proud of, and where many residents take an active role in improving the town in various ways. It is for this reason that we are eagerly anticipating their input. We invite all residents to spread the word about the upcoming information session so that the community can understand what the framework entails. We want the LSDF to guide the future growth of Mamre in the best possible way but we need the valuable input from the community as the ultimate goal is to ensure effective and relevant future planning for their town,’ said the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Spatial Planning and Environment, Alderman Marian Nieuwoudt.

The draft LSDF considers the unique challenges Mamre faces as an area and how the important assets of Mamre need to be protected and in some ways be improved in order to preserve and sustain the area for the current and future residents and visitors. The framework will provide more detailed local area planning and land use and urban form guidelines to guide decision making for public and private investment.
The LSDF does not give or take away any rights but rather provides a future development vision and the identification of guidelines and projects that would assist towards the implementation to achieve that vision.
Some of the areas identified and considered in drafting the proposals in the draft LSDF include the following:
Natural environment
Agriculture
Heritage, culture and tourism
Built environment
Employment
Land ownership
A few of the areas of opportunity for Mamre include:
Local tourism opportunities such as hiking, biking and other local experiences.
Identification of residential infill areas
The drafting of a more detailed land use plan for the areas outside the urban development edge
Identification of areas for local business development
Once approved, the LSDF will provide various development guidelines for Mamre, which will include enhancing town entrances; encouraging retention and rehabilitation of historic fabric and will promote formalised Non-Motorised Transport through the town.
