GAUTENG – Police Sergeants, Johannes Tebogo Mpete (37), Matsobane Victor Kwanaite (38) and Lesiba Richard Mapela (40), were convicted for corruption in the Pretoria Specialised Commercial Crimes Court today.
The Hawks’ Serious Corruption Investigation revealed that on 14 February 2016, the trio was on duty when they stopped a motorist. They searched the vehicle and reportedly found drugs. The motorist was then arrested for dealing in drugs. Along the way to the police station, the members offered to release the suspect provided he paid them R5000-00 gratification.
The victim could only come up with R3000-00 at the time and he was released. A case docket was registered shortly afterwards and fully investigated. It was then forwarded to the Senior Public Prosecutor for a decision. On 09 March 2021, the court issued summons for the trio.
On Monday, 20 February 2023, the trio was found guilty on the charges of corruption. They will be expected back in court on Wednesday, 19 April 2023 for sentencing.
