Lenasia Magistrate Court Shooting Condemned

Lenasia: Justice and Constitutional Development Minister Mamoloko Kubayi has strongly condemned a shooting outside the Lenasia Magistrate Court, which claimed the life of one person. The victim was a 27-year-old man awaiting to testify as a witness in an ongoing murder case being heard in the court.

According to South African Government News Agency, the Minister emphasized the importance of security within court premises. Kubayi stated, “The safety of all court users is of the utmost priority. The security breach violates the core of the court administration system. We expect courts to be the custodians of justice and a safe place for our citizens.”

The department has promptly taken action to enhance security measures for high-risk matters. “I can confirm that in less than 24 hours, the department, in collaboration with the National Prosecuting Authority and the South African Police Service, is implementing enhanced security measures for high-risk cases. This includes an integrated security plan and a comprehensive threat and risk assessment to protect witnesses and court officials,” Kubayi added. The goal is to ensure that public safety and security at the Lenasia Magistrate Court are urgently restored.

Operations at the court are ongoing, with arrangements made to provide psychological support to affected court staff due to the trauma of the incident. The department reiterated its condemnation of the act, emphasizing the need to uphold the rule of law, which is a cornerstone of democracy. The department also highlighted the Constitution’s role as a guide for peaceful and lawful dispute resolution, warning against any attempts to destabilize the justice system.

The public is urged to assist by reporting any information related to the shooting to aid the investigation and lead to a successful prosecution. The department called upon the public to help strengthen the justice system collectively and resolve disputes within the constitutional framework.
