Leading Cape Town call centre gives staff, industry a shot in the arm with vaccination drive

Last week, Alderman James Vos, the City of Cape Town’s Mayoral Committee Member for Economic Opportunities and Asset Management joined one of Cape Town’s leading call centres, Capita, for the launch of their vaccination drive for their staff.

‘This vaccination rollout is a significant campaign for a company operating in one of Cape Town’s biggest and most globally recognised sectors. It says to the world, ‘We are taking action to protect our staff,’ said Alderman Vos.

Capita is a crucial corporate partner to CapeBPO, a City-funded Special Business Partner, which has trained and helped employ thousands of people in Cape Town’s call centres. The Mother City has become Africa’s call centre hub employing more than 60 000 people in the city.

‘The SBP has helped bring R3,4 billion in investments into the economy in the past three years alone while helping 17 037 people gain employment – many of them at Capita. With this drive, the Maitland-based business is also playing its part in helping to fully open up our economy by making the vaccines available at four separate sites to their 3 800 staff,’ said Alderman Vos.

Capita South Africa’s Managing Director, Hemal Varma, said, as a responsible business, the health and safety of its employees was important, not just for the sustainability of the company, but also for the growth of South Africa’s economy.

‘We started on this journey of doing vaccinations in-house because supporting the well-being of our staff is crucial to our operations and business,’ said Varma.

Alderman Vos urged other call centres and businesses in other industries to follow Capita’s lead in making the vaccines as accessible as possible to their employees.

‘These jabs are the most powerful shot in our fight against Covid-19, revitalising the economy and building back better,’ said Alderman Vos.
