Kwambonambi: President Cyril Ramaphosa has hailed the late Ambassador Nkosinathi ‘Nathi’ Mthethwa as a ‘remarkable leader’ whose conviction helped to steer South Africa’s march towards democracy. The President was speaking during the Ambassador’s funeral held at Kwambonambi in KwaZulu-Natal following his passing at the age of 58 in Paris, France, where he was stationed as South Africa’s Head of Mission.
According to South African Government News Agency, President Ramaphosa expressed his mourning and gratitude, highlighting the Ambassador’s courage and dedication to freedom and justice. Mthethwa, an anti-apartheid activist, began his journey in the students’ movement as a teenager and later joined the ANC’s underground work in the 1980s, illustrating his lifelong commitment to social justice.
The President emphasized Mthethwa’s unwavering activism against apartheid, noting his refusal to accept injustice and his proactive role in organizing workers, underground meetings, and mobilizing young people for peaceful resistance. Mthethwa’s dedication stemmed from a belief in the struggle for freedom and dignity for every person.
Following the advent of democracy, Mthethwa served as Minister of Sport, Arts and Culture from 2014 to March 2023, as well as Police Minister from 2008 to 2014. He was later appointed by President Ramaphosa as the Ambassador to France, where he worked to promote South Africa’s cultural heritage and identity on an international stage.
President Ramaphosa praised Mthethwa’s advocacy for culture and his efforts to forge international friendships and alliances. He acknowledged the sacrifices made by Mthethwa’s family, expressing the nation’s shared grief and pride in his life of integrity and fulfilled mission.
The President called on society to honor Mthethwa’s memory by renewing their commitment to improving the lives of South Africans. He urged the public to protect the freedoms Mthethwa fought for, confront inequality, and raise their voices for the voiceless, living up to the ideals that inspired the late Ambassador.
Mthethwa was honored with a Special Official Funeral Category 2, which included ceremonial elements performed by the South African Police Service (SAPS).
