KZN Motorists Urged to Exercise Caution Amid Weather Warnings

Durban: The KwaZulu-Natal Department of Transport has called on motorists to exercise heightened caution on the roads following warnings from the South African Weather Service (SAWS) about extended rainfall impacting various areas of the province. The appeal for vigilance comes as weather conditions are expected to deteriorate, posing potential hazards for drivers.

According to South African Government News Agency, the SAWS has issued a Yellow Level 2 warning for widespread showers and thundershowers expected in the south-western region of the province. The forecast predicts rainfall accumulation of at least 40 millimetres, which could lead to flooding and localized disruptions. The districts anticipated to be most affected include uMgungundlovu, Amajuba, uThukela, eThekwini, Zululand, Ilembe, and Umkhanyakude.

Transport and Human Settlements MEC, Siboniso Duma, emphasized the importance of safety, particularly for those involved in school transportation, reminding them of their responsibility to transport future leaders safely. Duma also highlighted the readiness of a roving team from Human Settlements to intervene swiftly if necessary, in response to any destruction caused by the adverse weather.

Additionally, Duma announced proactive measures to aid families affected by rainfall since January 1, 2025, with plans to provide temporary accommodations. Efforts to improve infrastructure are also underway, with the introduction of a contractor to rehabilitate the P32 road from KwaMaphimbane to Uitval, as part of broader initiatives to enhance road networks in the province.

In related developments, a new Head of Department for Human Settlements, Sihle Maxwell Mbili, has been appointed. Mbili brings extensive experience from his previous role as Chief Director – Corporate Services in the department and as former Municipal Manager of Ray Nkonyeni Local Municipality, where he was recognized for effective governance and infrastructure development. Under his leadership, Ray Nkonyeni achieved clean audits and was distinguished as a well-managed municipality.
