Clairwood, KwaZulu-Natal - In response to the devastating fire that destroyed over 200 shacks last week Friday in Clairwood's informal settlements, the KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Government has initiated emergency relief efforts for the displaced residents.

According to South African Government News Agency, who visited Clairwood on Monday along with Human Settlements and Public Works MEC Sipho Nkosi and eThekwini Municipality Speaker Thabani Nyawose, the government is focusing on both immediate and long-term recovery for the affected community. The visit aimed to assess the damage, understand the community impact, and show solidarity with the residents.

Dube-Ncube announced that the government has mobilized resources to provide essential assistance, including shelter, food, and other necessary supplies for those displaced by the fire. She highlighted that the province faces significant challenges, such as invasions of privately-owned land unsuitable for housing construction and individuals owning RDP houses but choosing to reside in informal settlements to rent out their properties.

The Premier emphasized the importance of ensuring that only legitimate victims receive government assistance and that measures are being taken to prevent fraudulent claims. The government is collaborating with law enforcement agencies and the local community to address issues of tenant intimidation.

Dube-Ncube assured that the actions taken and commitments made during their visit to Clairwood would be closely monitored. These efforts are seen as crucial in bringing hope and relief to the hundreds of affected residents who are currently awaiting assistance.
