KwaZulu-Natal Department Assures Ample Space for Children in Need in uMgungundlovu District

KWAZULU-NATAL – The KwaZulu-Natal Social Development Department has addressed recent concerns regarding the availability of space in Child and Youth Care Centres (CYCC) in the uMgungundlovu District, ensuring that there is sufficient capacity to accommodate children requiring care and protection.

According to South African Government News Agency, responding to reports in some media outlets suggesting a lack of space in these centers, the department clarified that their CYCCs in the uMgungundlovu District are not operating at full capacity. The department emphasized that recent headlines implying children were left without shelter due to space constraints were based on misinformation. This response is in line with the department’s commitment to providing safe and nurturing environments for children across the district.

The department maintains a robust working relationship with private children’s centers, and according to them, none have reported space shortages. They are aware that they can contact State facilities when children first come to them. The department, as the custodian of children’s rights, encourages citizens with children in distress to contact its office for support.

Reiterating the credibility and reliability of their CYCCs, the department urged the public to depend on accurate information and to avoid spreading unnecessary panic. They assured that their centers are well-equipped to handle cases involving vulnerable children, with no shortage of space.

The department also invited the public to collaborate in utilizing the State CYCCs, aiming to collectively provide a secure and caring environment for children in challenging circumstances. They remain dedicated to the welfare of individuals, families, and communities in the province, with a particular focus on child and youth care, operating CYCCs to ensure the safety and protection of children in need.
