KwaZulu-Natal Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs updates on floods as families continue to receive burial support

An update on the KwaZulu-Natal floods as families continue to receive burial support

Families that have been affected by the KZN Disaster Floods continue to receive support from the Provincial Government and stakeholders including businesses.

Psychosocial support

The Department of Social Development, SASSA and the Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs are finalizing profiling, provision of psychosocial services, and provision of food vouchers.

Burial support rolled out to disaster-hit families

We appreciate the help towards burial costs from the Motsepe Foundation and AVBOB. As part of the 30 million donation to the disaster, the Motsepe Foundation will cover all funerals. This amount will be paid through a funeral parlour that would have been identified by each family. AVBOB has put aside R3 million towards burial costs, a contribution of R20 000.00 per family. The services will be done by AVBOB.

At this stage, there are no combined or mass funerals that have been confirmed as families are making individual arrangements with the support received from the institutions mentioned

We wish to commend the municipalities such as the Ilembe, Ugu, King Cetshwayo Districts and eThekwini for the support they continue to provide to the affected families.

We wish to thank all the stakeholders that have donated towards disaster relief.

Mop up operations

Communities are urged to play an active role in the clean-up of flooded areas.

Recovery operations are still underway

The hard-working men and women that make up our disaster management teams are continuing with the work of recoveries. On this front, we commend the SAPS and SANDF for the precision with which these operations are done supported by the additional capacity brought by teams from other provinces.
