Durban, South Africa – The KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Government is intensifying its efforts to expand broadband access across the province, with the goal of achieving universal connectivity and establishing KwaZulu-Natal as a major technological hub. This initiative is part of the province's broader strategy to transition to a digitally advanced society.

According South African Government News Agency, Premier Nomusa Dube-Ncube, speaking at the KwaZulu-Natal Information, Communication, and Technology (ICT) Summit in Durban, outlined the province's Digital Transformation Strategy. The strategy focuses on enhancing digital interactions across government sectors, as well as between government, citizens, and businesses. Currently, only 27% of the province is connected, prompting a push to accelerate province-wide connectivity.

The ICT Summit, held from November 9 to 10, 2023, has gathered digital experts, public and private sector stakeholders to explore the role of technology in enhancing operational efficiency and service delivery. This summit, co-hosted with Vodacom Business and the provincial government, serves as a key platform for ICT professionals to discuss and showcase advanced technology solutions.

Themed “Moving KZN Towards a Smart Province”, the summit aims to transform KwaZulu-Natal into a smart and technologically connected province that is inclusive for all. Dube-Ncube highlighted ongoing initiatives, including the installation of Wi-Fi hotspots and Digi-centres in townships, rural areas, schools, health facilities, and community service centers.

Significant progress has been made, with the Office of the Premier leading the installation of Wi-Fi hotspots and the training of 3,875 youth in digital skills across four districts. Digital hubs have been established in schools, enhancing access to technology for students and incorporating data science and AI into the curriculum. All provincial libraries have Wi-Fi, and health facilities are connected.

Emphasizing the need for public-private partnerships, Dube-Ncube acknowledged the critical role of the private sector in achieving the province's connectivity goals. Vodacom Business has been instrumental in collaborating with the government on various connectivity solutions.

Additionally, the Department of Transport is exploring the implementation of an online registration system in collaboration with the Road Traffic Management Corporation, with pilot projects planned for the uMgungundlovu and eThekwini Districts.

The Economic Development, Tourism and Environmental Affairs Department has invested nearly R8.6 million in establishing digital centers across KwaZulu-Natal, further advancing the province's digital transformation agenda.
