Kariega K9 arrests alleged cable thief

KARIEGA – On 1 October 2022, Kariega K9 Unit arrested an alleged cable thief in Sellick Street.

On the said day at abou 21:45, the Kariega K9 Unit were alerted by a security guard at premises in Sellick Street, Kariega about a suspicious person on the roof of a building attempting to steal power cables. Kariega K9 Unit handler, Sergeant Vincent Upton and his K9 partner, Razor responded and proceeded to the scene where upon arrival, the suspect was spotted on the roof. A loud bang was heard as he allegedly attempted to pull the cables.

Upon noticing the police presence, the suspect jumped from the roof and attempted to flee from the police into an alley way. K9 Razor was able to catch up to the man as he attempted to flee the scene and the suspect was arrested. The estimated damages caused to the cable are approximately R 5000-00. The 38-year-old male was charged with attempted theft of cables as well as malicious damage to property.

He is appearing before the Kariega Magistrate’s Court today.
