Kariega Bridge Reopening Brings Relief and Hope to Residents

KARIEGA: Kariega residents expressed profound relief and joy as the Cuyler Bridge, damaged during the October floods in Eastern Cape Province, was officially reopened by Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality Mayor, Babalwa Lobishe. The R3.8 million refurbishment of the bridge marks a pivotal step in revitalizing local economic activity and reconnecting communities that were isolated by the floods.

According to South African Government News Agency, the reopening of the Cuyler Bridge signifies the successful completion of Phase 1 of a broader infrastructural project aimed at boosting Kariega’s growth. Mayor Lobishe emphasized the importance of the bridge in the local economic zone, stating that its closure had adversely affected businesses. She noted that the project has now moved to Phase 2, which focuses on enhancing the water management system by clearing the riverbank and cleaning the canal and drainage system to reduce flood risks.

Mayor Lobishe also announced additional key projects underway in Kariega, which
include the rebuilding of the Jubilee Canal and Gibbon Bridge, with a combined value of approximately R6.2 million. She highlighted that these infrastructure projects are progressing faster than anticipated, with the Matanzima Bridge now slated for completion in under 10 months, well ahead of its original 24-month schedule.

In her address, Lobishe warned residents about the dangers of littering in rivers, storm water drains, and canals, as such actions exacerbate flooding during heavy rains. Acting Director of Project Management, Sisanda Njanjula, assured the community that efforts are being made to complete the project before the festive season, acknowledging the canal’s proximity to residential areas as a safety concern.

Kariega community member, Belinda Snam, expressed gratitude to the municipality and Mayor Lobishe for prioritizing the development of Kariega. Snam noted the positive impact the reopening of roads will have on the community’s ability to enjoy the upcoming festive season.
