Gqeberha K9 Unit members recovered a hijacked courier bakkie within an hour in Noyo Street in Kwazakele this morning, 17 September 2021.
It is alleged that at about 08:20, the driver and his passenger were driving in central towards the post office when a bantam bakkie drove alongside them. The passenger pointed a firearm at the driver and forced him to stop. The armed suspect then got into the vehicle and instructed him to drive however after a while he stopped and was shoved into the bantam bakkie. The suspect then drove the vehicle into Railway Flats in New Brighton where most of the contents from the back of the bakkie was offloaded on the pavement. The driver and his passenger were then dropped off in Noyo Street in Kwazakele with the bakkie.
At about 09:00, the K9 Unit members detected the tracker activation and found the vehicle abandoned in Noyo Street. It is further alleged that most of the parcels were recovered at the Railway Flats. No suspects arrested.
Police are investigating a case of vehicle hijacking.
Not long after this recovery, K9 Unit members also recovered a Toyota Quantum taxi that was stolen in central this morning. At about 10:45, the vehicle was found abandoned in Dayasi Street in New Brighton. It is alleged that at about 09:30, the driver (32) parked the taxi at the taxi rank with the keys in the ignition. He was busy talking to someone when the suspect got in and drove off. The tracker activated and members found the vehicle abandoned in New Brighton. The driver’s cellphone and cash were taken. No arrests.
A case of theft of motor vehicle will be investigated by SAPS Humewood detectives.
A total of six hijacked/stolen vehicles taken in September 2021 from the metro and parts of a stolen vehicle were recovered yesterday, 16 September 2021 by K9 Unit members and three of the recoveries were assisted by the Vehicle Crime Investigation Unit in Gqeberha.
Acting NMB District Commissioner, Brig Thandiswa Kupiso commended the K9 Unit and specialised unit (VCIU) for the recovery of several hijacked/stolen vehicles. ‘Vehicle hijackings are a concern and every effort will be made to crack these syndicates. We appeal to the communities to report any suspicious activity in their areas like the unloading of quantities of merchandise,’ urged Brig Kupiso.
