K9 Unit confiscate abalone worth over R3,7 million in Gqeberha

GQEBERHA – Gqeberha K9 unit arrested a 38-year-old male and confiscated abalone to the approximate street value of R3,7 million on Thursday, 22 July 2021.

It is alleged that at about 14:30, members acted on information received and executed a search warrant at a house in Shauder Avenue in Holland Park.  Police seized 140 plastic bags containing frozen de-shelled abalone (1400kg), 13 plastic bags containing dried abalone (233.88kg), 5  deep freezers, a scale  and a cellphone. The abalone was handed over to the Department of Sea Fisheries for storage.

The suspect was detained for contravening the Marine Living Resource Act, 19 of 1998 Regulation 36 sub sect 1 – illegal possession of abalone.

He is expected to appear in court soon.
