K9 Unit assists with drug search

The City’s Traffic Service, Law Enforcement and Metro Police departments arrested 221 suspects and issued 80 681 fines during weekly patrols. Read more below:

Metro Police officers arrested 134 suspects of which 66 were for the illegal possession and the sale of drugs. Officers also issued 4 612 fines.

On Sunday, 13 February 2022, Metro Police officers from the K9 Unit and Tactical Response Unit arrested two suspects for possession of drugs at  Zuurberg Street, Heideveld.

The officers were busy with crime prevention patrols when informed by members of the public about the premises where illegal drug activities were taking place. On arrival, officers confronted two persons and carried out a search of the premises. With the assistance of K9 Kai, drugs were found in pipes that were attached under a table.

The officers arrested the suspects and they were detained at Manenberg South African Police Service (SAPS). Officers confiscated 100 units of heroin, five packets of tik and two Mandrax tablets, which were booked in for further investigation.

On Thursday, 10 February 2022, during foot patrols in Charl Malan and Wilshammer streets, Bellville officers noticed a suspicious male hiding something in a gutter. When the officers confronted the suspect, he  ran away but was apprehended. Officers took the suspect back to the location where he had hidden something. When officers inspected the gutter, they  found 27 Mandrax tablets. The suspect was arrested and detained at Bellville SAPS.

During regular patrols in the Bellville area on Wednesday, 9 February 2022, officers arrested a suspect for dealing in drugs. CCTV operators detected an incident where a suspect appeared to be dealing in drugs and dispatched members to investigate. At around 09:00, the officers spotted the suspect and informed him of the reason for their presence. The officers were directed via the CCTV operators to the vicinity where he was spotted dealing in drugs and found fifty-eight and a half Mandrax tablets and 13 bankies of dagga. The suspect also had R440 in his possession. The 30-year-old suspect was arrested for dealing in drugs and was detained at Bellville SAPS.

‘The integrated approach by our enforcement departments continues to demonstrate how we are committed to combatting crime in our communities. The role that our community members play in sharing information that could lead to criminals being arrested and brought to book should not be underestimated’, said the Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security, Alderman JP Smith.

CAPE TOWN TRAFFIC SERVICES

Officers arrested 71 suspects, impounded 185 vehicles, 100 cell phones and issued 72 285 fines during weekly patrols throughout the metropole.

The Transport Enforcement Unit conducted operations throughout the City and arrested four  suspects, impounded 117 vehicles and issued 4 665 fines for various road and vehicle safety offences.

Weekly enforcement operations held on the N2  led to officers  issuing 1 820 fines for road safety transgressions. Officers also arrested one suspect for reckless and negligent driving.

On Thursday, 10 February 2022, officers arrested nine suspects in Wetton road for outstanding warrants during a Taxi enforcement operation.

LAW ENFORCEMENT DEPARTMENT

Officers made 116 arrests in the past week of which Law Enforcement Advancement Plan officers accounted for 107 arrests. Officers also issued 3 784 fines.
