Inmate allegedly commits suicide in police custody at Otavi

A 32-year-old Namibian man who was arrested on stocktheft charge at Otavi on Friday afternoon allegedly committed suicide on Saturday inside a police holding cell at the town.

The Namibian Police Force (NamPol) head of community affairs in the Otjozondjupa Region, Senior Inspector Maureen Mbeha in an interview with Nampa on Saturday said the deceased’s next of kin are yet to be informed of his death.

She said the deceased, who was arrested on Friday at 16h00, allegedly hanged himself with a piece of blanket on the police holding cell burglar door inside the cell.

‘His body was found at about 04h30 on Saturday morning by some members of NamPol,’ said Mbeha.

The deceased was arrested after meat of a stolen cow was found in his possession, added Mbeha.

No suicide note was found found, and no foul play is suspected.

Police investigations continue.
