As Women’s Month draws to a close, the City of Cape Town’s Transport Directorate shines the spotlight on Vuyiswa Kraba, the Manager of Public Transport Operations who is giving her all to improve commuters’ experience.
Vuyiswa has been managing public transport operations for one year and five months now and her grasp of policy development, planning and now operations make her stand out.
Vuyiswa chose public transport as a career after her mother and nephew were in an accident that involved a public transport vehicle. She had a choice between transport logistics and public transport, but opted for the latter as it focused on providing quality and safe public transport services to commuters.
The driving force behind her passion is to contribute to giving our commuters access to opportunities, work and school by providing accessible, safe and affordable means of transport as well as being part of a team that strives to improve and provide world class public transport service for Cape Town community.
‘My motto in life is ‘You get what you give’ and being part of a process that is designed to give my all to commuters is what gets me going in the morning. Knowing that someone is going to travel using our bus services to work, school, a health facility, or opportunity, and is able to get back on time and safe, gives me peace. As women we have to believe in our capabilities and resolve. We are nurturers, leaders and decision makers, all at the same time. Women must forge their own path, in a way that works for each one. We must find our niche and create our own empires. Phambili makhosikazi, phambili,’ said Vuyiswa.
‘Public Transport is predominantly a male-dominated industry and Vuyiswa is breaking the stereotypical barriers. Her colleagues value her contributions and are very supportive. Vuyiswa is the true epitome of Imbokodo – a rock. Her career choice followed after a tragedy and is now very rewarding. With her managing public transport operations, I am at peace that our commuters are in the right hands. Igama lamakhosikazi malibongwe,’ said the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Transport, Councillor Rob Quintas.
