An eight meter Humpback whale has washed up on the rocks in Sea Point.
The City can confirm that a whale carcass washed up on a rock this morning, Thursday, 9 December 2021. The cause of death is unknown. The City’s Coastal Management Department has confirmed that this is not an unusual occurrence as there are currently many humpback whales along the coastline and when there are this many, it is common for one or two dead carcasses to wash ashore.
The City plans to remove the carcass by tomorrow, 10 November 2021. However, to tow it off the rocks with a vessel, the City needs to wait for high tide later today. If this operation is successful, the team will then tow it to the Oceana Power Boat Club, where a flat truck will collect it and transport it away.
