Keetmanshoop: The || Kharas directorate of health and social services in collaboration with IntraHealth Namibia on Friday launched the HIV Undetectable = Untransmittable ( U = U ) campaign for the region . The U = U signifies if an individual ‘ s HIV viral load is Undetectable in their body . Launching the campaign , || Kharas regional council chairperson , Joseph Isaacks said the implications of U = U are far – reaching adding that for individuals living with HIV , it means a life free from the fear of transmitting the virus to their partners . ‘ It means dismantling the stigma that has long been associated with HIV , it means improving the quality of life and mental well – being of millions of people around the world . Currently , about 50 per cent of clients interrupt their ART in the region due to stigma . With these concepts , we are expecting a drastic decrease in treatment interruptions due to stigma and discrimination ,’ he said . The chairperson urged the community to continue to challenge the stigma
and discrimination that still exist and advocate for policies that support the health and rights of people living with HIV . ‘ As we launch this concept today , let us commit to spreading this life – affirming message far and wide , let us work together to ensure that every person living with HIV has access to the treatment they need to achieve an undetected viral load ,’ urged Isaacks . IntraHealth , || Kharas regional project manager for integrated TB and HIV services , Simon Shashipapo said the U = U campaign objectives are among others to educate and inform individuals about the science behind U = U , promote regular HIV testing and adherence to treatment for those living with HIV , empower individuals living with HIV by affirming their right to a fulfilling , healthy life and to engage in intimate relationship without fear of transmission . ” As we launch this initiative , I invite each of you to become ambassadors of U = U , share this message within your communities , support those who are living with
HIV , and contribute to creating an environment where everyone can access accurate information and compassionate care ,” he urged .
