Government wishes to update members of the media on the arrangements in place to cover the Special Official Funeral of the Anglican Archbishop, Emeritus Desmond Tutu. Archbishop Tutu passed away on Sunday, 26 December 2021, aged 90 after a long illness. He will be laid to rest on Saturday, 01 January 2022 at his former parish St George’s Cathedral, Cape Town.
In recognition of the late Archbishop Emeritus’ distinguished life and invaluable contribution to the nation, President Ramaphosa has designated the late leader’s funeral as a Special Official Funeral – Category 1. This designation is enabled by the State, Official and Provincial Official Funeral Policy Manual.
- Media Accreditation
As per the media advisory issued on 28 December 2021, the application process for accreditation closed today at 10h00.
Members of the media who have successfully applied are advised to collect their accreditation as follows:

VENUE: Legislature Office, 07 Wales Street, Cape Town
NB: No accreditation will be issued beyond these dates and times
To be accredited, media will be expected to produce a press card and identification, i.e. the green barcoded or Smart ID, South African Identity Document or a passport for foreign nationals. Once accredited, media and accreditation cards must be visible at all times.

Funeral proceedings will be carried live through various national and international broadcasting channels. In addition, provision has been made to stream the funeral service live on the following government platforms:
