A recent report from Fraport, the operator of Frankfurt Airport, has revealed a slowdown in passenger traffic growth at Germany primary aviation hub.
There is a modest 0.5% increase in passenger numbers to 6 million in July compared to the same period last year.
The airport growth trajectory has notably decelerated compared to earlier months in 2024.
The number of flights at Frankfurt Airport also experienced a slight decline of 0.3% year-on-year, reaching 40,515 aircraft movements in July.
This contrasts sharply with the robust growth witnessed earlier in the year as the airport grapples with a slower recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic than other major European aviation hubs.
While Frankfurt Airport managed to accommodate nearly 6 million passengers in July, this figure remains approximately 13% below the pre-pandemic levels of 2019.
This stark discrepancy highlights the airport challenges in regaining its pre-pandemic momentum, especially when compared to other European giants like London Heathrow, which has been consistently setting new passenger records in 2024.
Despite the overall slowdown, there are positive indicators. Fraport reported sustained strong demand for long-haul routes, particularly to the United States and China.
The latter witnessed a remarkable 35.5% year-on-year surge in passenger numbers during July.
Moreover, airlines operating from Frankfurt achieved a record-high monthly load factor of 86.1%, surpassing the previous peak of 85.9% set in August 2015.
While Frankfurt Airport grapples with moderate growth, Fraport other airports have demonstrated more robust performance.
Ljubljana Airport in Slovenia experienced an 8.1% year-on-year increase in passenger traffic, while the company 14 regional airports in Greece collectively reported a 3.8% growth.
Antalya Airport in Turkey also contributed to the positive trend with a 2.1% increase in passenger numbers during July.
As the European travel industry continues to rebound from the pandemic, the differential performance of Frankfurt Airport compared to its peers underscores the complex challenges faced by the aviation sector.
While long-haul routes show promise, the airport overall recovery remains a work in progress.
