Frances Baard District Police swoop on illegal gambling activities at tuck shops

KIMBERLEY - The Frances Baard District stations namely Galeshewe, Kagisho and Kimberley and Crime Intelligence in conjunction with the Northern Cape Gambling Board and Home Affairs, executed an intelligence driven operation in the Sol Plaatjie local municipal area on Wednesday, 08 January 2023.

The team led by Brigadier Charlotte Makgari from the Frances Baard District was the Operational Commander.

The team acted on verified information of alleged illegal gambling activities at certain tuck shops in the Sol Plaatje Municipal area and executed search warrants to raid the identified tuck shops.

A total of 11 gambling machines from different tuck shops and coins amounting to R18 896.00 were seized and confiscated by the police.

The Department of Home Affairs checked and verified the nationality status of the affected tuck shop owners.

Mr Gaopelelwe Motlhabane, a member of the Northern Cape Gambling Board, said that the operation was the beginning of ongoing compliance inspections with the police in accordance with the National Gambling Act 7 of 2004.

The Frances Baard District Commissioner, Major General Johan Bean commended all the role-players for the collective efforts executed in addressing crime.

He said these kind of illegal gambling activities must be prevented to protect our children and other vulnerable persons from harm and exploitation.
