POTCHEFSTROOM – Four accused between the ages of 25 and 38 are expected to appear before the Orkney Magistrates’ Court on Monday, 21 February 2022, for possession of unlicensed firearm and ammunition. The accused will also be facing an additional charge of possession of suspected stolen property.
The accused’s court appearance stems from an incident reported on Friday, 18 February 2022, at about 12:00 in Ariston Road, Orkney. Members of the Dr Kenneth Kaunda District Illicit Mining Team were on patrol when they spotted a suspicious vehicle parked next to the road and searched it. As a result, the members found a pistol, loaded with ammunition. In addition, the members discovered next to the vehicle, police reflector jackets and parts of a police bullet proof vest in a back pack. Thus, the accused were arrested.
The Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Sello Kwena, lauded the team members for their dedication that resulted in the achievement of the success and indicated that the police will continue to work hard to ensure that illegal firearms are removed from the wrong hands. He also urged the public to report without delay, theft or loss of their firearms to the police.
