WESTERN CAPE – Efforts to combat gang violence on the Cape Flats saw the deployment of various SAPS resources in the metropole.

Today, at approximately 09:45, members attached to Maitland Flying Squad were deployed in the Manenberg Policing precinct, when they spotted a suspicious male on the corners of Plate and Renoster Road.

The suspect fled with police members in pursuit. The suspect pointed the police members with a firearm, upon which the police members responded by firing gunshots, wounding the suspect and confiscating a firearm with ammunition. The 25-year-old man was arrested, detained and transported to a nearby hospital for medical treatment under police guard.

Once charged the suspect is expected to make a court appearance in the Athlone Magistrate court on a charge of possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.
