Female Police Officer Killed on Duty at Mange Burreh Police Checkpoint

A tragic road accident has claimed the life of Woman Police Constable (WPC) 21676 Jenneh Mansaray, who was killed while on active duty at the Mange Burreh Police Checkpoint. The incident occurred when a Mercedes Benz Tipper Truck, with registration number ATR 087, struck the officer. The vehicle was being driven by Mustapha Jalloh, a resident of Devil Hole Junction in the Western Rural Area.

WPC Mansaray, who was attached to the Operational Support Division (OSD) of the North West Regional Headquarters in Port Loko, was performing her routine duties at the checkpoint. The fatal accident occurred around 5:30 PM after Mansaray had been instructed by her superior to open the checkpoint and allow the truck to proceed after inspection. As she approached the crash barrier to clear the path, the driver, in his eagerness to continue the journey, prematurely accelerated the truck, hitting and running over the officer.

Eyewitnesses report that the driver continued driving after the impact, seemingly unaware of the gr
avity of the situation, and had to be pursued and apprehended by authorities. The case is currently under investigation by the Port Loko Police Division.

Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Aminata Bangura, the District Traffic Officer (DTO) for Port Loko, described the accident as one of the most horrific she has encountered since assuming office. ASP Bangura revealed that the driver was transporting twenty live cows from Gbom Samba to Kamakuwie at the time of the incident. The driver has since been arrested and is in custody. WPC Mansaray’s body was transported to the Connaught Mortuary in Freetown for a post-mortem examination and has now been laid to rest in her hometown in Bo, Southern Province.

In an interview with the Sierra Leone News Agency (SLENA), ASP Bangura emphasized that reckless and inattentive driving likely contributed to the accident. She assured me the case would be thoroughly investigated, and the driver would face legal court proceedings. ASP Bangura also issued a stern warning to
all motorists, urging them to maintain their vehicles properly, avoid excessive speeding, and exercise heightened caution, particularly during the rainy season, to ensure the safety of all road users.
