Farm Owner Survives Violent Attack in Chrissiesmeer, One Suspect Arrested

Polokwane: A 46-year-old Malawian national has been arrested for alleged attempted murder, stock theft, and the contravention of the Immigration Act following a violent incident at a farm in Chrissiesmeer in the early hours of Friday, 19 September 2025. Police received information about an attack in progress and, together with Emergency Medical Services, responded swiftly to the scene.

According to South African Police Service, on arrival, officers found the farm owner suffering from a stab wound to the neck. A suspect was also found at the scene with a gunshot wound to the right thigh. The victim recounted that he had been inspecting his farm after noticing that the perimeter fence had been cut, when he was suddenly attacked by two suspects. One of the attackers stabbed him in the neck. In self-defense, the victim managed to shoot one of the attackers, while the second suspect fled on foot.

Both the victim and the injured suspect were transported to hospital for medical treatment. The suspect was subsequently placed under arrest and charged with attempted murder, stock theft, and the contravention of the Immigration Act. He remains under police guard in hospital and will appear before the Ermelo Magistrate’s Court once declared medically fit. Additional charges may follow.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the suspect who fled is currently out on bail and facing charges related to other cases in Carolina and Chrissiesmeer. The Acting Provincial Commissioner of the SAPS in Mpumalanga, Major General (Dr) Zeph Mkhwanazi, has welcomed the arrest and assured the public that the suspect who fled will be brought to justice. Major General (Dr) Zeph Mkhwanazi stated, ‘It is clear that the suspect has not learned his lesson, as he continues to commit crimes while out on bail. He will be put where he belongs.’
