Farewell Reception Marks Conclusion of Solar Energy Training Course in Sierra Leone

On Friday, a farewell reception was held to commemorate the successful completion of a training course on installing and using solar energy in Sierra Leone. Sponsored by the Ministry of Commerce (MOFCOM) of the People’s Republic of China through the Chinese Embassy and organized by the Ministry of Employment, Labour, and Social Security (MELSS), the course brought together 25 participants aimed at promoting solar energy skills across the nation.

The event underscored the importance of renewable energy in Sierra Leone’s economic and social development. The reception commenced with welcoming remarks from Dr. Xia Yiayin, who chaired the event. Dr. Xia congratulated the participants for their dedication and emphasized the transformative potential of renewable energy for Sierra Leone’s development.

Mr. Zhang Duinbin, Minister Counselor of the Chinese Embassy, delivered a keynote address highlighting the significance of solar energy in meeting the country’s energy needs and combating climate change. He reiterate
d China’s commitment to supporting Sierra Leone toward energy independence and sustainable development. He praised the collaboration between the Chinese Embassy and MELSS, noting that this partnership marks a significant milestone in enhancing technical knowledge and cooperation between the two nations.

The Chinese Ambassador to Sierra Leone further emphasized the value of cooperation between the two countries. He pointed out that solar energy presents an excellent opportunity for Sierra Leone to meet its growing energy demands in a clean and environmentally friendly manner, encouraging participants to apply their newly acquired skills in their communities.

The four-week training course covered essential aspects of solar energy technology, including:

Basics of solar energy and photovoltaic systems

Installation and maintenance of solar panels

Solar system troubleshooting and problem-solving techniques

Energy efficiency and renewable energy policies

The 25 participants expressed their gratitude for the o
pportunity to participate in this training program. One representative shared how the knowledge and skills gained would empower them to address Sierra Leone’s energy challenges, particularly in rural areas with limited access to electricity.

Mr. Mohamed Rahman Swaray, Minister of Employment, Labour, and Social Security of Sierra Leone, addressed the attendees, stating:

The farewell reception concluded with a message of appreciation from the Minister of Energy, who reiterated the government’s focus on renewable energy as a vital component of its national development agenda. He hoped participants would utilize their expertise to advance Sierra Leone’s renewable energy sector and serve as ambassadors for solar technology within their communities.

The event culminated in the presentation of certificates of participation to all trainees, followed by an informal networking session that allowed participants, trainers, and stakeholders to discuss future collaborations.
