Fake EPWP contract doing rounds in the city

The City of Cape Town has been alerted to a scam by a person who has been selling fake Expanded Public Works Programme contracts to unsuspecting and desperate community members. The City wants to warn the public against this scam and to not fall for this fraudulent activity.

It is alleged that the scammer has sold over 70 fake contracts to unsuspecting community members who are desperate for work.

This is a very sad and serious crime as this scammer is luring unemployed people by offering them fake jobs in return for money. This at a time when unemployment is at its highest and people are desperate to provide for their families.

We understand that our residents are desperate for jobs, however, we appeal to them to please be extra vigilant. It is very important to note that the City would never ask community members to pay for job opportunities, or to pay to apply for a job.

Here’s what to look for to determine if a job is a scam:

The recruiter contacts you

You receive a job offer right away

The pay is extremely high

Job requirements and description are vague

The company requires payment from you

The job promises that you’ll get wealthy fast

Communication appears unprofessional

Contact information for the employer or company is missing

A company requests confidential information before hiring

A case of fraud has been opened with the South African Police Services.

We appeal to residents to please come forward with any information that may help bringing the perpetrator to book.
