Cameroonian tennis umpire, Eric Martial Tanga, is participating at the 2024 Paris Olympics as one of the tennis line judges.
His selection for the tournament marked the first participation of a Cameroonian referee in the event. He said he received the invitation with ‘enormous satisfaction’.
The umpire who is one of the top tennis officials in Africa, indicated that his selection for the Olympics came as result of ‘hard work’, adding that he received it with much fulfilment of ‘reaching the summit’.
His role at the Olympics which is that of a line judge, will involve tracking ball movement during play, and determining if the ball lands within marked boundaries. Line judges have to be able to make quick judgements on whether the ball is in or out of play. They stay focused on their assigned lines.
Eric Tanga has participated in other big international competitions including the Roland Garros and the Wimbledon tournaments.
