End of Load Shedding Remains Within Reach, Says Minister

Pretoria: The Minister of Electricity and Energy, Dr. Kgosientsho Ramokgopa, is confident that the end of load shedding in South Africa is within reach. Briefing the media on Sunday following the implementation of Stage 6 load shedding, Ramokgopa assured the nation that the government and Eskom are making long-term decisions in the best interest of the country’s power grid and economy.

According to South African Government News Agency, Ramokgopa emphasized that the government will not make expedient decisions at the cost of the grid, as the consequences could be severe. He acknowledged that while load shedding might suggest a failure on the part of the ministry, strategic decisions are necessary for the long-term benefit of the grid and the South African economy.

The Minister reassured the public of significant progress in stabilizing the electricity supply, stating that the end of load shedding is within touching distance. Key developments in Eskom’s recovery plan include the synchronisation of Kusile Unit 6, which is now scheduled for March 9, and Medupi Unit 4, expected by the end of March or early April. These additions will provide 1,600 megawatts to the grid.

Ramokgopa acknowledged the public’s frustration but expressed confidence in the direction they are heading. He emphasized the government’s commitment to the generation recovery plan, which is showing positive results despite occasional setbacks. Ongoing maintenance work is critical to ensuring that, when load shedding is ultimately declared over, it is done so with confidence.

In response to concerns about Eskom’s operational decisions, Ramokgopa dismissed any suggestions of underhanded dealings, reiterating that all efforts are aimed at long-term sustainability. He assured that South Africa’s energy supply will be stable and sustainable, with a commitment to environmental obligations.
