The Department of Employment and Labour will this week from 15 – 17 March 2023 conduct employer inspections at Heiderand and Kwanonqaba Malls in Mossel Bay, Western Cape Province.
The activity follows a recent campaign conducted in Mountain Mall in Worcester from 22 – 23 February 2023. The on-going inspections are aimed at ensuring compliance after the Department found that there is a high level of non-compliance in the retail sector in the province with 57% of employers not registering, declaring and paying UIF contributions, which results in employees not receiving any benefits or not receiving them in time when they submit claims to the Unemployment Insurance Fund.
During the campaign the department’s Employer Audit Services unit will:
Raise awareness to employers and employees respectively about their rights and responsibilities.
Register employers who want to be converted to U-filing;
Register all unregistered employers with the UIF and the Compensation Fund; and
Ensure that the public, employers and employees are educated and informed about the UIF and the Compensation Fund.
