PARKTOWN - The members of Provincial Organised Crime Investigation Unit have arrested 11 suspects for stopping a contractor from installing fibre in Lenasia on 20 June 2022. These suspects are appearing today, 23 June 2022, before the Lenasia Magistrate’s Court on charges of malicious damage to property, assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, theft and robbery.
It was reported that a group of people stopped workers contracted to install fibre in Lenasia, assaulted them and robbed them of their personal belongings. The contractor opened a case at Lenasia Police Station which was subsequently transferred to Organised Crime Investigation Unit in the province for investigation.
The Provincial Commissioner of Gauteng Lieutenant General Elias Mawela has welcomed the arrest. “This illicit business forums that are extorting money from contractors is affecting the economy of the province. Contractors that are affected by these illicit business forums are urged to report to their nearest police station as there is a dedicated team at the provincial level investigating these cases,” said Lieutenant General Mawela.
