Electoral Commission on results of municipal by-elections held on 24 May 2023

During the by-elections contested yesterday in Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal provinces, both the African National Congress (ANC) and the Democratic Alliance (DA) retained their seats won in the 2021 Municipal Elections.

The new DA councillors are:

Daniel Jacobus Christoffel Putter, in ward 25, Ekurhuleni Municipality – EKU, Gauteng. The party retained its seat won in the 2021 Municipal Elections, with 66,12% of the total votes cast, compared to 69,72% during the 2021 Municipal Elections. Voter turnout yesterday was 25, 65%.

Yvonne Combrinck, in ward 08 Lesedi Municipality – GT423, Gauteng. The party retained its seat won in the 2021 Municipal Elections, with 52,45% of the total votes cast, compared to 50,86% during the 2021 Municipal Elections. Voter turnout yesterday was 32, 32%.

Daniel Logan Mea, in ward 73 eThekwini Municipality – ETH, KwaZulu Natal. The party retained its seat won in the 2021 Municipal Elections, with 81,74% of the total votes cast, compared to 67,47% during the 2021 Municipal Elections. Voter turnout yesterday was 27, 23%.

The new ANC councillors are:

Ngcebo Richman Dludla, in ward 15, Mandeni Municipality – KZN291, KwaZulu-Natal. The party retained its seat won in the 2021 Municipal Elections, with 67,94% of the total votes cast compared to 70,05 during the 2021 Municipal Elections. Voter turnout yesterday was 36, 37%.

Leonard Thembinkosi Sosibo, in ward 12, uMzimkhulu Municipality – KZN435, KwaZulu-Natal. The party retained its seat won in the 2021 Municipal Elections, with 65,73% of the total votes cast compared to 79,49% during the 2021 Municipal Elections. Voter turnout yesterday was 51,91%.
