Electoral Commission on Municipal By-elections results held on 18 January 2023

During the by-elections contested yesterday in KwaZulu-Natal, the Democratic Alliance (DA) and the Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) each won a seat.

The new DA councillor is:

Renisha Singh, in ward 28, Msunduzi Municipality- KZN225, KwaZulu-Natal. The party retained the seat won in 2021 Municipal Elections, with 59,70% of the total votes cast compared to 62,03% during the 2021 Municipal Elections.

Voter turnout yesterday was 33,93%.

The new IFP councillor is:

Joy Bukiswa Mthyane, in ward 09, Mtubatuba Municipality – KZN275, KwaZulu-Natal. The party won the seat previously won by the African National Congress (ANC) in the 2021 Municipal Elections, with 77,22% of the total votes cast compared

to 41.49% in the 2021 Municipal Elections. Voter turnout yesterday was 42,40%.

The By-elections in ward 12, Dannhauser Municipality, KwaZulu-Natal, were postponed.
