Electoral Commission on day two of the registration weekend

In the early part of today, with the use of the new Voter Management Devices (VMDs), the Commission has been able to register 29 305 voters. This is in addition to the      598 000 that was registered by the close of business on Day One. The VMDs have been performing admirably today in all provinces.

The Commission also reports that only nine of the 23 151 registration stations did not open today. This was mainly because of service delivery protests. The Commission continues to work with the South African Police Service and local leaders to resolve the problems.

The registration weekend has also seen heightened use of the Online Portal for registration. So far, 39 519 voters have registered for the elections using the portal, which remains open until midnight tomorrow – 20 September 2021. We encourage South Africans to continue making use of this facility.

The Electoral Commission also wants to make the following announcements:

Applications for Special Votes open tomorrow – 20 September 2021. We urge South Africans who wish to apply for a special vote to apply online or at the MEO office.

The nomination of candidates for the municipal elections re-opened and closes on 21 September 2021 at 17h00.

The Commission thanks South Africans who have come out in their numbers to register and urges those that have not done so to use the last few hours of the registration weekend to register or visit our online portal.
